In this paper, we report growth characteristic of Scopelophila cataractae,
which is known as copper moss. First, we examine how to obtain axenic plants
because that will enable us to control various conditions surrounding plants by
artificial means. Next, we investigate the influence on growth of S. cataractae
by the kind of medium, the changing pH, and the concentration of copper in a
medium using two measurements: a ratio of the protonemal
area and the chlorophyll concentration. The results revealed that the growth
behaviorfs dependence on the concentration of copper differed by the kind of
medium in S. cataractae.
With further research in the future, these results can contribute to an
elucidation of the mechanisms of copper tolerance in S. cataractae.
