A pressure ulcer (bedsore) is damage to the skin and underlying tissue, primarily caused by prolonged pressure or friction on the skin. In this study, we focused on mucin (glycoprotein) and tested its effectiveness in reducing friction between skin and bedclothes (with repeated washing), which is believed to be the cause of bedsores. The load (vertical force) applied to the shaft of the surface-measuring machine was set to 200 [g], the reciprocating speed was 3000 [mm/min], and the jigfs moving distance was 20 [mm]. One mL of water or solutions with different concentrations of pig stomach mucin was dropped on the cloth pieces, and the same measurement was performed. As a result, the friction-reducing effect of the mucin suspension was confirmed. Applying a mucin suspension concentration of 300 ~ 400 [g/L] on the cloth was especially effective. It was also confirmed that the coefficient of friction was not affected by the number of times the bedclothes were washed.

Key words: mucin / friction / pressure ulcer / artificial leather
