Effects of Crab Shell Waste on the Growth of Plant Seedlings

This study examined the growth-promoting effects of crab shell waste on plant seedlings using two experimental approaches. In the first experiment, seeds of radish (kaiware daikon) were sown and cultivated in aqueous solutions derived from crab shell extract at dilution ratios of 15-, 60-, 150-, and 300-fold, with tap water serving as a control. Germination rates were higher in the 15- and 60-fold treatments than in the others. In addition, these treatments resulted in significantly longer seedlings than the other treatments (P < 0.05). In the second experiment, biodegradable seedling pots incorporating crab shell materials were fabricated using traditional Japanese paper from Fukui Prefecture. Eighteen days after sowing, radish seedlings (hatsuka daikon) grown in crab shell?amended pots exhibited significantly greater seedling lengths than those grown in pots without crab shells (P < 0.05). These findings demonstrate that crab shell waste can promote early plant growth under specific conditions and highlight its potential as a sustainable agricultural resource.
